Patient Group Directions (PGD) Support Service

Patient Group Directions (PGD) provide patients with greater accessibility to specific medicines without having to see their GP, whilst maintaining patient safety. This reduces pressure on GP appointments and non-medical prescribers. The service also supports Primary Care Networks to carry out patient specific work efficiently and increases flexibility of the workforce.

We have a robust PGD development and management service underpinned by standardised processes, training and competencies for clinicians involved. Our service provides the pharmacist expertise to develop PGDs with medical and nursing approvals for organisations where required. Where nationally approved PGDs are not available for your services, then we are able to support local organisations.

We are committed to sharing best practice. Some of the PGDs we have developed can be downloaded free from our library section when you register. Examples include such as varenicline (Champix) and emergency hormonal contraception.
